I know it's hard to watch global and national politics right now. This run-up to the US Presidential election. It's hard not to feel doomed. People in power just can't stop f**king up. It makes sense to think that power is sinister, self-serving and greedy, right?

I get it.

But look again. Look at power through a child's eyes this time.

Look on a quiet night, when screens that spew hate 24/7 are finally off.

Sit by your nephew's bed.

Notice the stick figure family he scribbled, the mushroom house he painted...they're framed, front and centre on his bedroom wall. That tells you something. His imagination is treasured in this home.

The monsters under his bed (and out there) are big and scary, yeah. But those drawings? Those have an incredible amount of power too. He's drawing out his world. And he believes in it without overthinking.

How you see power matters. Your nephew, son, daughter or child's futures are being shaped by your beliefs. You're a role model for them. Children are sponges, they make up their beliefs by watching you. You mirror the belief that power is sinister and bad? They learn that.

You practice power that is forgiving to yourself and helps others bloom? They learn that. You finally publish your art because you taught yourself to believe that your words have power? (I taught parts of this workshop in 2022 to Black, Indigenous soveriegnty and food justice visionaries in the Ecotrust Viviane Barnett Fellowship. They loved it. A senior mentor to fellows who had been in justice spaces for 30+ years said that what I taught was a completely new way of engaging with power.)
